Episode 213: DJ Cut Creator
/

Jay “DJ Cut Creator” Philpot is a legendary DJ who helped bring hip-hop to the mainstream in the 1980s. Known for being the DJ and collaborator for LL Cool J, he also helped define the role of the DJ for a wider audience.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Jay Philpot was exposed to music early on through his father, Jack Philpot, a well-known saxophonist who played with artists like Wilson Pickett. After learning the trombone as a child, Philpot was drawn to the emerging hip-hop scene and transitioned to DJing in the late 1970s.

Philpot met a young LL Cool J in their Queens neighborhood and became his official DJ. The two became key collaborators, with Cut Creator joining LL Cool J on his global tours. As LL Cool J’s DJ, Cut Creator appeared on popular shows like Soul Train and American Bandstand, helping to introduce the role of the hip-hop DJ to a wider, mainstream audience. Beyond the turntables, Cut Creator has worked as a producer for other artists and has appeared in films, including the classic hip-hop movie Krush Groove. He also has had a successful career as a radio host in major markets.
