/

On this episode of the Sounds Visual Radio spinoff series How Deep Is Your Crate, saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht phoned in to talk about his new album “Bremen New York,” and shares some of his favorite records by Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, and Paul Motian.

Timo Vollbrecht is a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. His music combines jazz with elements of post-rock, electro-acoustic timbre, new music, and instrumental songwriting. Originally from Germany, he has been an active member of the artistic communities in New York and Berlin. With his band FLY MAGIC, he has toured over 30 countries, recorded numerous albums, and appeared on landmark stages like the Village Vanguard and NYC’s Winter Jazz Fest. He leads a trio with guitarist Ben Monder and vocalist Theo Bleckmann and has played with Branford Marsalis, Kenny Werner, and Ralph Alessi.

For his newest album, Vollbrecht brings together his international dream band: Ralph Alessi, Elias Stemeseder, Chris Tordini, and Thomas Strønen. Captured live in the legendary Sendesaal Bremen, the album unfolds with raw intimacy, lyrical depth, and chamber-like precision. Composed specifically for this moment, Vollbrecht’s music thrives on spontaneity and synergy. “Bremen New York” is both homage and innovation – a bold statement rooted in jazz tradition, yet unmistakably modern. A captivating sonic journey shaped by five masters at the top of their craft.
