Episode 222: David Porter
/

David Porter is a monumental figure in American music, best known as a primary architect of the “Memphis Sound” and a cornerstone of the legendary Stax Records. Born in Memphis in 1941, Porter’s career began in his youth, often competing in local talent shows alongside his close friend and classmate Maurice White, who would later found Earth, Wind & Fire. Porter’s entry into the professional industry was serendipitous; while working at a grocery store across from Satellite Records (the precursor to Stax), he began pitching himself as a songwriter. He eventually became the label’s first staff songwriter and played a pivotal role in its evolution into a soul music powerhouse, recruiting future stars like Booker T. Jones and William Bell to the roster.

The most defining chapter of Porter’s career was his prolific songwriting and production partnership with Isaac Hayes. Together, the duo penned more than 200 songs, including timeless classics such as Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’.” Their work was not only commercially successful, with catalog sales exceeding 400 million units, but also culturally significant; Porter has noted that many of their lyrics were intended to reinforce the dignity and humanity of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. His influence extends into the modern era through frequent sampling by contemporary artists, notably appearing in Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover,” Will Smith’s “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It,” and The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya?”

In addition to his success behind the scenes, Porter was an accomplished solo artist, releasing several albums under the Stax imprint Enterprise in the early 1970s. His solo work, including the ambitious concept album Victim of the Joke? An Opera, showcased his versatility as a vocalist and arranger. Beyond his musical output, Porter has been a tireless advocate for the city of Memphis. In 2012, he founded The Consortium MMT, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring the next generation of music professionals through structured teaching and real-world experience. For his lifelong contributions to the arts and his philanthropic efforts, Porter has received numerous accolades, including induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and a ranking on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.
