On this episode of the Sounds Visual Radio spinoff series How Deep Is Your Crate, drummer/bandleader John Sturino phoned into talk about the debut album of his band Blow Globe, and to share some of his favorite LP’s by artists including Thad Jones, Maria Schneider, and Diego Schissi.
BLOW GLOBE, winner of the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant in 2024, is a ten person ensemble that melds the sonorities of instrumental jazz and classical with the ethos of contemporary electronic and pop/rock. Led by Juilliard-trained drummer and composer John Sturino, the band is the vehicle through which Sturino unapologetically expresses myriad musical ideas and moods. BLOW GLOBE will be released on Outside In Music on June 6th, 2025.
BLOW GLOBE is the result of many years of Sturino working/playing/experimenting in an effort to discover his voice as both a composer and drummer. In 2023 Sturino was finishing up his studies at Juilliard, but was feeling less than enthusiastic about the music he was performing at the time; much of feeling antithetical to so many of the qualities of music that he loves. Sturino explains, “I have such a wide array of musical tastes, and had been thinking about creating a space and medium for me to express a wide variety of styles and idioms. While I was honing in on a chamber ensemble type of group for a few months, I came across the record Song For My Mother by Walt Weiskopf, and this really sealed the deal for me. On that record, I heard that you could create incredibly lush sounds like a big band while still retaining the lightness and buoyancy of a smaller group. That was very inspiring, and was one of the seeds for the birth of BLOW GLOBE.”
