If you’ve bought a record in Portland sometime over the last several years, there’s a decent chance it came from Tim Rust, who is the proprietor of Gratitude Records and has a simple philosophy: hustle, grind, and repeat. Tim is constantly on the move, driving all over the Northwest, buying vinyl record collections, aiming to keep his inventory fresh and his clientele happy. He stopped by to talk to us about how learned the business of buying and selling records, first starting small at 360 Vinyl and eventually expanding his consignment into several locations all over Portland. Tim also opened up about why he’s been buying country records more lately, what the most expensive LP he ever bought was, and how sobriety recalibrated his priorities.
