Episode 4: DJ Derek Smith
/

Having a broadcasting career in jazz radio was never part of Derek Smith’s game plan, but they say that luck is merely when opportunity meets preparation. Derek tells us about his childhood and college years in Texas, then his experiences jumping around England, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, New Zealand, Seattle, and finally, settling in Portland. He also explains how doing the sound design for an August Wilson play led to a chance encounter that opened up an entire new life for him. We also share a laugh about how a warped copy of Bullet’s “The Hanged Man” on vinyl ultimately led to our friendship.
